Give a warm welcome to the Queens Zoo's newest resident, and first-ever, Andean bear cub!
We're thrilled to announce the first Andean bear born in New York City! He's out with mom now exploring, climbing, and sometimes tumbling, his way through the exhibit.
The cute cub was born in late November to mother Nicole and father Bouba. You may remember that the two bears came to the zoos as part of the Species Survival Plan, which is why we're so happy they've successfully produced a cub. There are only 42 Andean bears in AZA-accredited zoos and only six potentially viable breeding pairs in the SSP population which makes this occasion especially important.
With fewer than 18,000 Andean bears left in the wild, the Queens Zoo and Wildlife Conservation Society have been working to study and conserve these bears in their native South American range since 1977.
