We offer different types of field trips at the Queens Zoo for Middle Schools (6th through 8th grade), including in-person CLASSROOM PROGRAMS, GUIDED TOURS and self-led SCAVENGER HUNTS.

Our talented WCS Educators will lead your students through a wild experience! Programs are designed to meet appropriate learning standards in a way everyone is sure to enjoy. Your class will explore wildlife, meet an animal, and engage in an active learning environment.
Meet an Animal
Classroom Programs | Grades 6th-8th
Looking for a special experience with multiple classes? Get up-close with ambassador animals during a private meet-and-greet experience! Instructors will work with classroom teachers to support themes based on grade level. All programs align with NYC Scope and Sequence.

Junior Scientist
Classroom Programs | Grades 6th-8th
WCS scientists and keepers use observations to help answer questions and so can you! We'll start with an animal meet and greet to put student observation and inquiry skills to the test. Afterwards, your young scientists will venture into the zoo to practice making observations, asking questions, and proposing a hypothesis. This program is a great way to introduce the scientific process and encourage students to create investigations.

All programs will include an up-close animal encounter, exploration of one or more zoo exhibits and other activities that correspond to your curriculum.

Guided Tours
Explore the Queens Zoo with a Tour Guide Volunteer as your expert! Each one hour-long tour focuses on a specific theme. Both are available to schools or other groups. If you are interested in learning more about our animals and exhibits, schedule your tour today!
Adaptations
K - 12th
How far can a puma leap? How long can a sea lion stay under water? Answer these and other questions as your students learn about physical and behavioral adaptations that help animals survive the wilds of the Americas.

Habitats & Diets
K - 12th
Do mountainous Andean bears eat fruit? How do coyotes survive in New York City? Explore answers to questions like these and more as your students learn about the habitats and diets of our amazing animals.

Mammals
K - 8th
Your students will learn about the characteristics and adaptations of mammals as they explore some amazing mammal exhibits around the zoo. Compare mammals from North, Central and South America. They will also have the opportunity to touch and feed some of our farm mammals too.

Birds
K - 12th
This tour focuses on the amazing features that birds have and their incredible diversity! Your students will explore the adaptations of ducks, birds of prey, parrots, and more! They will also learn how they can do simple things to help protect our avian friends.

Protecting the Environment
K - 12th
Why are thick-billed parrots in trouble in the wild? Can we protect oceans for sea lions and other aquatic animals? While exploring our animals around the Zoo, your students will learn about endangered species and discover some things that we can all do to protect wildlife.

Scavenger Hunts
Keep your students excited and learning while visiting the zoo! Developed with the help of our Teacher Advisory Committee, scavenger hunt worksheets are specifically designed for your student's developmental level, provide engaging experiences throughout the zoo, and meet NYC Scope and Sequence and Common Core requirements. All scavenger hunt activity sheets come with a container of food for the farm animals. Limit one container of food per class.
Mystery Animal Scavenger Hunt
Grades K-8
Solve mysteries like a scientists! Your group will explore exhibits, following a set of clues to solve the identity of the mystery animal together. This is a self-guided scavenger hunt designed for multi-generational learning fun.

Wild Science Scavenger Hunt
Grades K-8
Ever wanted to be a keeper or a field scientist? In this self-guided scavenger hunt your group will explore the park, and along the way, try out some of the skills scientists and zoo keepers use. Wild Science is designed for groups of all ages to work together to complete this fun scavenger hunt.
