Three Little Piggies

May 9, 2013

The zoo is now home to three mulefoot hogs, a breed of domestic pig that is classified as critically rare by The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.

A charming trio of mulefoot hogs has moved onto the Farm. This domestic breed is known for having solid, non-cloven hooves (resembling those of a mule), and also for its rarity. According to the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, there are fewer than 200 purebred mulefoot hogs on record, as farmers no longer commonly breed them.

The three hogs are all females and have course black coats, typical of this breed.
